Carmona statement on the transportation bill
Dr. Richard Carmona, the 17th Surgeon General of the United States, released the following statement on the passage of the transportation bill:
"By an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote, Congress today reauthorized a transportation bill that funds road, bridge and transit projects supporting 2.8 million jobs nationwide - thousands of which are here in Arizona. It supports vital infrastructure projects that will help our economy recover, and provides enormous opportunity for growth and job creation here at home - yet Congressman Flake voted against it."
"One of these potential projects is an interstate that would connect Phoenix and Las Vegas through a public-private partnership. The Hassayampa Freeway is a project years in the making and a great example of how our public and private sectors can work together for universal benefit. This project would not only create much needed construction jobs, but it has the potential of creating thousands more in a variety of different sectors by improving mobility and trade for Arizona businesses."
"I commend Sen. Jon Kyl for voting in support of it and question Congressman Flake's ideological vote against it. While no piece of legislation is ever perfect in Washington, we cannot let perfect be the enemy of the good when thousands of Arizona jobs are at stake. Passing this bill to support Arizona’s hard-hit construction industry is common sense, and only a six-term Congressman could fail to see that."
